Set up VPN on Windows

Choose your operating system below and follow the instructions to set up University VPN.

You will need to connect to the VPN every time you want to use a service that requires it.

Windows 7
  1. Click on the Start menu in the bottom left.
  2. Type "VPN" in the search box.
  3. Click on the item marked Set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection
  4. On the Create a VPN connection settings screen, enter the internet address as vpn.shef.ac.uk and the Destination name as University VPN
  5. Click Next
  6. When prompted enter your username and Remote Access Password.
  7. Only select Remember this password if you are confident that your computer is secure and will not be shared with other people.
  8. Click Connect.
  9. You are now connected to VPN.
Windows 8 & 8.1
  1. From the Start screen press the Windows key + W
  2. Windows 8 - select Apps from the options below the search box
  3. Windows 8.1 - select Everywhere from the drop down list
  4. Search for, and then select, Control Panel
  5. From the View by drop down list (top right) select small icons
  6. Select Network and Sharing Center
  7. Select Set up a new connection or network
  8. Select Connect to a workplace
  9. Click Next
  10. Select "No, create a new connection"
  11. Click Next
  12. Select Use my Internet connection (VPN)
  13. In the Internet address box enter vpn.shef.ac.uk
  14. In the Destination name box enter UoS VPN
  15. Click Next
  16. To connect to the VPN press the Windows key + W and search for Network
  17. Select Connect to a network
  18. On the Networks bar select UoS VPN then the Connect button
Windows 10

  1. Click on the Start menu
  2. Go to Settings followed by Network & Internet
  3. Click on Add a VPN connection
  4. Enter the following;
  5.      VPN provider: Windows (built-in)
  6.      Connection name: UoS
  7.      Server name or address: vpn.shef.ac.uk
  8.      VPN type: Automatic
  9.      Type of sign-in info: User name and password
  10. Press Save
  11. Select the new ‘UoS’ entry and press connect                                                                     
  12. When prompted enter your username and Remote Access Password.
  13. Only select Remember this password if you are confident that your computer is secure and will not be shared with other people.
  14. Click Connect.
  15. You are now connected to VPN.
