Windows 7 - End of Life Notice

Windows 7 will no longer be supported by Microsoft from January 2020. If you are still running Windows 7 here’s what you need to do.

You must upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as possible

If you are a member of University staff running an unmanaged Windows 7 device the options available to you are:

  1. Upgrade to a Managed Windows 10 Desktop - contact your departmental IT support for advice.
  2. If you have no departmental IT support you should contact the CiCS Helpdesk (ext 21111).

Students should take their devices to the Student Equipment Support Service in the Information Commons for advice on an upgrade.

You should make sure your data is backed up before any upgrade.

Why do I have to do this?

Failure to migrate away from Windows 7 before January 2020 will result in you being more exposed to security threats as updates will no longer be provided by Microsoft. This in turn will put your colleagues at risk as your device may get infected by malware which is then transmitted to your colleagues via email etc. We will therefore disconnect all machines that pose a risk to other users on the University network .

It may also lead to some third party applications becoming unusable in the future

How will upgrading to Windows 10 benefit me?

Doing this will allow you to reduce cyber security threats. Additionally it will ensure that you are using the most up to date versions of the software available and getting the best possible user experience.
