Post-earthquake Disaster and Risk Management
The Concrete and Earthquake Engineering (CEE) group secured a Newton Fund Institutional Links grant for a two-year project on ‘Post-earthquake Disaster and Risk Management through a Rapid Response Framework for Industrial Zones in Turkey’. Catastrophic damage to industrial facilities during the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake caused extensive fires and environmental pollution in Marmara region (see Tupras refinery on fire in photo below), impacting negatively on social and economic welfare. However, reliable vulnerability assessments, appropriate deployment of seismic risk management strategies, and rapid post-disaster response can significantly reduce seismic losses in future earthquakes.
The collaboration addresses Turkey’s societal needs by amalgamating complementary expertise of two leading institutions (University of Sheffield and Gebze Technical University) and two partner institutions (Sheffield Hallam University and Istanbul Technical University) in the fields of Earthquake Engineering, Seismic Risk Assessment and Crisis Management. The overall aim of the project is to develop, for the first time, a rapid seismic risk assessment and management framework for industrial facilities using a systems approach to significantly mitigate economic and societal losses and environmental pollution in future earthquakes, not only in Turkey but also in other developing countries. This is also expected to accelerate economic development and enhance societal welfare in the long term.
This project is part of the CEE group’s strategy to foster national and international collaboration, as well as society and stakeholders engagement.
