Intellectual property exploitation and spin-out companies
In recent years the Department has seen a significant increase the number of international patents awarded and also in the number of spin-out companies formed. Many of these business ventures have been founded with assistance from Suel (formerly Unisheff Ventures Ltd), who help those within and outside of academia commercialize technological intellectual property. Spin-out companies include:
|Founded in 2003, Blastech provides world leading services for blast, impact and ballistic testing to the private, security and military sectors, through the application of leading edge research and technology. Company personnel utilise many years of academic and commercial experience in the interpretation of complex blast and impact phenomena.|
|Conteque Ltd was established in 1999 so as to act as vehicle for exploitation of IP developed at the University of Sheffield in the field of concrete reinforcements. IPR rights were transferred following the end of the research project EUROCRETE, which developed durable FRP reinforcement. Subsequently, the company acquired the patents on concrete strengthening with metal straps, and patents for the "Shearband" system for punching shear reinforcement. The Shearband system has been licensed to Erico Inc, which is offering the product worldwide as Lenton Steel Fortress.|
Formed in 2006, LimitState specialise in the development of rapid and easy-to-use analysis and design tools for engineers, making use of innovative numerical methods developed in the University. At the start of 2014 over 100 industrial organisations were using their software, in over 30 countries worldwide.
|SEAMS, founded in 2002, provides analytics software and services to identify, plan for, and implement, asset performance improvements within utilities, power & energy, transport, public sector, and manufacturing. At the start of 2014 SEAMS employed 35 staff, formed of software developers, professional services, and business support, servicing clients in a wide range of markets.|
|Vulcan Solutions, founded in 2004, develops and markets the Vulcan structural fire engineering software, and provides specialist fire engineering consultancy services.|
