Research Project: Solute Transport In Flow Through Emergent Vegetation
My research focuses on an experimental study of solute transport in flow through emergent vegetation, particularly under the influence of random distributions of macrophytes with relatively different morphological characteristics.
Existing approaches are unable to capture the more relevant physical processes, hence a persistent disagreement between experimental evidence and numerical models is found in the literature.
The proposed study will investigate this difference, relating statistical descriptors of flow structures to detailed spatial characterisations of vegetation, and developing modelling approaches that account for their variations.
Results of this study could help improve the design and modelling of vegetated systems that rely on solute transport for water treatment like wetlands, estuaries and stormwater ponds.
