Profile

Rowena started her PhD in the autumn of 2019 after graduating from the University of Sheffield with an MEng in Civil Engineering. Her supervisors are Dr Elisabeth Bowman and Dr Colin Smith. She previously completed a summer research project sponsored by the British Dam Society, which is what initially sparked her interest in the area of internal erosion.

Research interests

Research Project Title: Hydromechanical factors influencing seepage-induced particle migration in internally unstable soils

Internal erosion poses a significant and increasing threat to water-retaining earth structures globally, including embankment dams and levees. This seepage-induced migration of soil particles is influenced by both the stress levels and hydraulic conditions within the structure. In this project, the impact of these factors on the initiation and progression of erosion are investigated using equipment developed for the University of Sheffield's 50gT geotechnical centrifuge.
