Profile

My teaching aims to bridge the gap between academia and engineering in practice. My industry experience means students get to experience large-scale projects in an industry context, providing important skills for employment.

Mr Paul Hulbert

Paul joined the Department as a University Teacher in 2013, bringing over 20 years’ experience from the water industry working across feasibility studies, civil detail design, hydraulic design, design team coordination, subcontract preparation and Project Management. He is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Paul teaches BIM and 3D modeling alongside sustainability and conceptual structural design from a qualitative point of view, to provide a fundamental understanding of how large projects work in real life and how to assess the sustainable credentials of options to help make better decisions.

A large part of this is the 3rd year Integrated Design Project, which aims to simulate large-scale projects in an industry context. The project aims to encourage students to apply their prior fundamental engineering teaching to large, open-ended problems.

This prepares graduates to enter the world of work by teaching them how to approach large, complex projects and conceptualise whole structures, while developing construction management and organisation skills.

Teaching activities

CIV173 (10 Credits)
First year introduction to engineering sustainability - I am responsible for this module aims to develop an introduction to systems, thought process and calculation to make evidence bases decisions for sustainable engineering solution.

CIV1900 ( 20 Credits) / CIV1901 ( 20 Credits) / CIV1902 ( 10 Credits)
First year civil engineering skills - I manage the whole course but am responsible for delivering the Hand drawing and BIM elements.

Faculty project EYH week
I act as an academic for this project week.

Dissertation management of all undergraduate dissertations
I manage the process for all undergraduate dissertations.

Individual project supervision
Supervise students on Bachelors and Masters course each year.

Integrated Design Project
I have been involved in this 60 credit module for five years. It prepares students well for future work and helps them gain important soft skills as well as applying technical skills.

Design Teaching Group
I am an active member of this group
