SS_class Affiliated to the Confucius Institute, the Star Mandarin School provides Mandarin Chinese language (simplified characters), Arts, Dance, Kung Fu and Maths courses to children and young people, aged 3.5-18 from all walks of life, in Sheffield and surrounding areas.

Open Saturdays during school term time, at Bartolome House, School of Law, University of Sheffield, Winter Street, Sheffield S3 7ND

All levels and language backgrounds welcome! Children are grouped according to an assessment of their existing knowledge of Chinese.

Two streams of Mandarin courses for native and non-native Chinese-speaking children, respectively, are offered.

Mandarin Chinese Course Structures

Programme for English-speaking children (enrolled at 4 -7 years old)

Programme for English-speaking children (enrolled at 8 years old and above)

Programme for Chinese heritage children.

All courses are linked with Chinese Proficiency Tests (YCT / HSK) and GCSE Chinese.

Preparatory classes for GCSE Chinese and GCE (A-Level) Chinese are open every September.

Normally a language course lasts for 2hrs, at the following times:
Saturdays: 9:00 -11:00; 11:15 – 13:15; 13:45 - 15:45.

GCSE Chinese Test

The Preparation Class for GCSE Mandarin Exam takes g place at the Star Mandarin School, on Saturday afternoons.

Open to secondary school children, who have already achieved the level of GCSE, equivalent to at least Grade D.

The Class is to go over the exam syllabus, polish the exam skills and aimed to achieve better exam results. The individual child must have already at the GCSE level.

The GCSE class cannot replace the systematic Mandarin study. The children are strongly advised to continue taking the study of "Zhong Wen", "Jin Bu", or "Happy Chinese", along with the GCSE class.

From 2019, the new test syllabus will come into force.

Please note: We are not Edexcel or AQA test centre, therefore will not be able to enroll a child for GCSE Chinese exam. Our students go back to their English mainstream schools for the registration. For your information, Silverdale School accepts external candidates.

A-Level Chinese Test

The Preparation Class for GCE (A-Level) Mandarin Exam takes place at the Star Mandarin School, on Saturday afternoons.

Open to secondary school children, who have already achieved the level of GCE, equivalent to at least Grade D.

Arts and Drawing Classes

Arts and Drawing classes open at the same time as Mandarin courses, lasting for 1.5hrs, at the following times:    Saturdays: 9:15 -10:45; 11:15 – 12:45; 13:30 - 15:00.

Foundation classes for children aged 3.5-5

We could accept as young as 3.5 years old, but the child should sit in for a trial session first, which is free. Held in a formal classroom, the class adapts a nursery setting, offering play group activities such as learning words, stories, singing and play games.

Foundation Classes last for 2hrs, at the following times:
Saturdays: 9-11 and 11:15-1:15.

Dance, Kung Fu and Maths Classes

Folk Dance 1: for younger children at 1:45-2:45 pm, Saturdays

Folk Dance 2: for older children at 3:00 - 4:00 pm, Saturdays

Kung Fu course 1: for older children at 1:45 - 2:45 pm, Saturdays

Kung Fu course 2: for younger children at 3:00 - 4:00 pm, Saturdays.

Maths for Y1/Y2; Y3, Y4/Y5 and GCSE: at 11:15-12:45pm; 1:00-3:00pm and 3-4pm
