Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield Honoured with the 2018 “Global Confucius Institute of the Year” Award
On 5th December, Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield (SCI) was honoured with the 2018 “Global Confucius Institute of the Year” Award at the 13th Confucius Institute Conference held in Chengdu, China. SCI has once again gained this prestigious award since it won the title in 2010 and 2015.
In partnership with Beijing Language and Culture University and Nanjing University, SCI was launched in 2007 by the then Prime Minister John Prescott and was one of the first Institutes to be named ‘Model Confucius Institute’ globally. Professor Sir Keith Burnett (President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield 2007-2018) was awarded “Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award of the Year” in 2014 and 2016, respectively. In 2016, SCI was awarded “Quality Framework Special Distinction” by the National Resource Centre for Supplementary Education (NRCSE) and became the 7th institute in the UK and the 1st outside of London to receive the honour.
Mr. TIAN Xuejun, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, presents the “Confucius Institute of the Year” Award to Dr. Lucy Zhao, Director of SCI.
In addition to its focus on Chinese language and culture, SCI has provided continuous assistance to the University of Sheffield in promoting advanced manufacturing, constructing business platforms as well as serving local healthcare.
In June 2018, SCI was transferred to Global Engagement to continue contributing to collaborations between China and the UK.
