Meeting the challenge: preparing the Mandarin at school

Madarin class for school teachers and staffChina-related topics, activities and links have certainly raised students’ global awareness, developed their cultural understanding and widened their global horizons and perspectives. However, taking Mandarin language into the school system is an even bigger decision. School may face a range of linguistic, pedagogical and cultural challenges.

We offer free Mandarin language taster sessions for school staff and teachers, aiming to give an introduction about linguistic features and cultural implications for teaching and learning Mandarin at school.

The taster session normally includes a seminar talk followed by practical activities. It is designed to introduce Mandarin language, as well as China and its culture. The practice part includes writing Chinese strokes and characters and conversing using daily phrases.

If there is enough interests from school staff and teachers (more than 5 enrolment), wanting to systematically study the Mandarin language, we are happy to open a course at school, similar to below "Survival Chinese". Alternatively, they are welcome to join the following two types of language courses, which are held at the University of Sheffield.

“Survival Chinese” 5-day (10-h long) intensive course focuses mainly on speaking and listening skills and covers vocabulary and expressions useful in everyday situations. It is suitable for learners with little or no prior knowledge of Mandarin.

"Chinese for Everyone", 12-w evening courses, are held on weekday evenings 6:30-8:30pm (2 hours per week) during the University semester dates. Classes are available at six levels: Beginners I and II, Upper Beginners, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. All courses include speaking, listening, reading and writing and can be followed up for several semesters.
