I came to academia relatively late having worked in the NHS and lived in different countries including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I joined the school of clinical dentistry as a research assistant in 2005 having gained my PhD in Sociology working with people with learning difficulties exploring their healthcare encounters. Since then I have gained my teaching certificate and been made a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am now a lecturer.

My work involves marginalised groups, mainly adults and children with disabilities. It involves challenging assumptions around people with disabilities, enabling their voices to be heard, explores issues around power, rights and social justice and creates a link with the discipline of disability studies. Health promotion is an area I also focus on and teach because of its multidisciplinary perspectives. My research is qualitative, especially around narrative, ethnography and developing innovative research methods.

Research interests

My research involves interdisciplinary perspectives of oral health and frequently uses innovative research methods. I am actively involved in the inclusion of people with learning disabilities in oral health research using participatory methods. This feeds into policy and the commissioning of services. My main aim is to release the previously unheard voices of groups who are marginalised in mainstream healthcare.
