I am a senior clinical teacher in the Unit of Primary Dental Care, School of Clinical Dentistry. After qualifying as a dentist I worked initially in the community dental service and then in general dental practice, owning a partnership for over 15 years. I also worked part time as a clinician within an Orthodontic department of a local hospital. In 2000 I had the opportunity to teach in a dental school in the Netherlands and I use this breadth of experience to enhance my teaching.
I have developed my teaching skills in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and have a particular interest in assessment and dental professionalism, areas I have been able to research as well as develop within the curriculum. This has resulted not only in publications but also in invitations to speak at a national meeting and conferences.
My research interests are primarily in education and particularly assessment of professionalism
In my role as Deputy Director of Learning and Teaching for the School of Clinical Dentistry I am integrating an improved system of assessing professionalism throughout the UG curriculum, mapping and developing the Social Accountability programme within the School.
I am also course director and creator of “Stepping Stones” this is a newly implemented (2016) course for clinical teachers aimed at part time tutors who have had little or no previous formal training in education. I am also involved in teaching the PGcert in Medical Education within the Academic Unit of Medical Education.
I supervise both clinical skills and clinical sessions for all years of the BDS degree programme, mainly in periodontology and restorative sedation. I give lectures in periodontology and preventive dentistry to both BDS undergraduate and Hygiene and Therapy students. Being directly involved in teaching gives me the insight to assess areas where innovation would be useful and then allows me to evaluate the effect of any teaching innovation.
