Student Support Manager 


Alex Berry joined DLL in July 2013 and has over ten years’ experience in Student Support roles in Higher Education. Alex holds a BA (Dual) Hons in English Literature and French and a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, both from the University of Sheffield. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Alex heads the Student Support and Welfare Team in DLL. Her role is to lead on strategy and enhancement in relation to the Student Experience and to co-ordinate the provision of student support, information, advice and guidance for DLL students. Alex also provides advice and guidance to individual students.

The Student Support and Welfare Team co-ordinates the administration of: attendance monitoring systems; extenuating circumstances; unfair means procedures and disability support arrangements for the Department’s students. The team provides support for the admissions process, including providing individual advice and guidance to applicants at interview and before arrival. The team also designs and coordinates the induction programme for new students and liaises with departments across the University and the Students’ Union in relation to the provision of language support, study skills, library and information literacy, careers, disability, welfare and financial support for students.

Since 2014, Alex has been a module leader and tutor on a number of study skills modules, both in DLL and in the School of Education.


Alex has the following roles in the department:

  • DLL Study Skills Programme coordinator – responsible for designing and delivering our in-house Study Skills Programme for mature and part-time students across the University
  • Personal and Academic Tutoring System (PATS) coordinator – responsible for managing and supporting the Personal Tutoring system in the department
  • Student staff committee (SSC) coordinator – responsible for arranging and supporting student staff committees for all our programmes

Alex is a member of the Universities Associates for Lifelong Learning (UALL) Student Experience Network.
