Honorary Professor

Vince Cable is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Economics. He is may be involved in collaborating with the department on future events or other academic activities. In 2015 Vince Cable gave the Knoop Lecture - the department's annual public lecture.

Biography

Vince Cable is the leader of the Liberal Democrat party and the MP for Twickenham. He was the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills from May 2010 until May 2015.

He has been Deputy Director of the Overseas Development Institute, which included working as a Special Advisor for the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry at that time, John Smith MP. From 1983 to 1990, he was Special Advisor on Economic Affairs for the Commonwealth Secretary General, Sir Sonny Ramphal.

In 1990 he joined Shell International taking up the post of Chief Economist in 1995. He has also been head of the economics programme at Chatham House and is a former fellow of Nuffield College Oxford and the LSE

He joined the Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet in October 1999 as Spokesman on Trade and Industry, having been a junior Treasury spokesman. He was the Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor from November 2003 until May 2010, Deputy Leader from March 2006 until May 2010 and then became the Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2017.
