Andy graduated in Physiology and Biochemistry with Chemistry.
He worked as a part-time lecturer in Further Education teaching TEC Biology, Physics and General Studies before commencing an MSc programme and then a PhD in Underwater Science & Technology (at Salford University in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence – Royal Navy) from where his publications originate.
He has experience in outward bound care work with young offenders. He obtained his PGCE in Science from the University of Sheffield and then worked as a science teacher specialising in Physics and Biology in an 11-18 school in the South Yorkshire area.
He has taught on the Educational and Professional Studies (EPS) strand of the PGCE course and on the (now discontinued) university's PCHE programme.
Andy is ITE co-ordinator for the Yorkshire and Humberside SEND network cluster and for the Yorkshire Initial Teacher Training in Science (YITTS) group.
Andy maintains a passionate interest in the great outdoors as a vehicle for the personal and professional development of both children and adults and he holds a number of National Governing Body instructor qualifications.
He has taken part in scientific expeditions to Scotland, Norway, Ecuador and Nepal to study aspects of marine biology, human physiology and ecology.
- Teaching interests
Andy has worked in the School of Education as a PGCE tutor since 1999. He co-ordinates the PGCE Science courses and the Physics with Mathematics course. He leads Biology pedagogic knowledge and understanding sessions for both specialists and non specialists and teaches generic sessions covering areas such as Classroom management, Lesson planning, Health and Safety in the school lab, First Aid issues, Teaching science through debate, simulation and drama, and Learning outside the classroom.
Andy is a pastoral tutor and supervises PGCE science students while on school experience. Andy co-ordinates the science strand of the MA APSE programme.
