Research interests

Research interests focus on affective computing and the personalisation of the (e)learner space, the application of emergent technologies such as VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) in complex learning, effects of gamification on the learning process and the applications of AI and learning in novel and unique problem solving.

A key area of research and development is using augmented reality in the teaching of medicine.

A second main strand is in emotion detection and classification to then personalise both the physical and virtual learning environments, aimed at increasing efficacy of the application of digital tools and providing a context sensitive learning environment – and the boundaries with personality, attention and cognition.

Teaching activities

I teach on the MA Psychology and Education and the MSc Psychology and Education (Conversion). Areas covered include the practical sessions for the MSc as well as teaching across the modules, and tutorials for the MA. Supervision of Masters students for the MSc Dissertation.

I have attended several conferences over the previous years to demo augmented reality/holographic technologies including live demos of holographic patients for applications in teaching and the use of holographic workstations to upskill medical workers.

I have been invited to speak/demo on the use and application of virtual reality within HE for research and teaching, and specifically within Psychology settings – most recently at UCLAN.

I provide consultancy for the development of emerging technology and novel applications with a range of partners, including an ongoing project with Karolinska Institutet.
