Digital Literacies, Culture and Childhood student, Hannah, found the course helped to deepen her understanding of the digital culture of children and the opportunities for Education which will now shape how she teaches when she returns to the classroom.

I have been a secondary school teacher for about 15 years, and reached the point where I wanted to take a year out to study at a higher level to refresh and move my teaching further forward. I applied for the MA in Digital Literacies, Culture and Education as I have a background of working in a school which embraced tablets for all students, so have seen the benefits of this integration, as well as some of the challenges. I also have two small children which makes me very aware that the digital culture they are growing up with is radically different to my own childhood.

I hoped to try out new digital practices as well as challenge my thinking and stretch my mind muscles through studying this course, and it has met those expectations. One of the strengths of the course is the degree of personalisation in the assignments which allowed me to pursue interests that had developed from material covered in the course, or which connected well to my teaching specialism in history. The course design is well structured with well supported assignments that build on the core concepts covered whilst inviting creative and individual thinking and approaches which builds in an appropriate level of stretch and challenge.

Through the course, I have deepened my understanding of the digital culture of children and the opportunities, as well as challenges, this poses for education. It has raised questions about the design and delivery of education in the UK and how fit this is for the modern digital world and workplace. Most valuably it has sharpened my criticality and reflective thinking, which I anticipate will shape how I now teach as I return to the classroom. Finally, I leave the course with ideas and a thorough grounding in carrying out research that opens the way for considering doctoral level study at a later date.

I highly recommend this course and the superb team of lecturers who run it to anyone interested in these fields.
