The Sheffield EdD - Information for new students in 2023

Welcome to the School of Education. We are looking forward to getting to know all of our new students in September. Here you'll find all the information you need to prepare for the start of your studies.

EdD Students

We're excited to welcome you to the School on 18 September for Induction Week! This week is your chance to get to know the School, the University and the city. There will be lots going on throughout the week across campus, but we really encourage you to attend all the events taking place for education students.

You'll find full details of your timetabled activities in iSheffield, which you can download via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store or access via a web browser.

If you hold a conditional offer and you now have the necessary documentation that proves you have met our offer conditions, please upload these urgently via the online application system. We cannot make your offer unconditional until this has been done.

All unconditional offer holders should have been sent an email from the Student Administration Service detailing how to register online for the programme.   Please complete the registration process as soon as possible.  It is vital that you are fully registered, have access to your University account and to our online learning environment, Blackboard, before the start of the programme on 2 October. Should you have any queries about the online registration process please contact the Registration Helpdesk ( where colleagues will be pleased to assist you.

Once you have registered we will send you further information about the Study School Weekends.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Blackboard

The University has its own Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) space, using Blackboard. As soon as you are registered, you should receive a University email address, a username, and a password.  When you visit, you will find a button in the top left corner "Log into MUSE" (My University of Sheffield Environment).  MUSE gives you access to 100,000s of articles and online books from the University library, to your University email account, and to Blackboard - you can find access to all these at the top, under "My Services".

When you click on Blackboard on the left-hand menu you will be taken to your customised area of the VLE where you can access the main EdD Blackboard site which gives you general information and an overview of the programme.  You will also be able to access the Blackboard sites for the individual modules as they are made available.

Reading List

On the main EdD Blackboard site the Resource List will provide a list of recommended reading that are available for you to access online.  This is only an indicative reading list, not a set of core texts. Because this is a doctoral programme, the texts you should purchase need to be related to your own programme of work.  As many books are now available on Google books purchases of specific texts should be minimal.  We have outlined the books on the Resource List as ones which offer general information/ guidance on matters relating to educational research.
