The Sheffield EdD

The EdD Programme is both challenging and intensely rewarding - the study weekends are fabulous and keep me motivated, engaged and fascinated with the wide range of contemporary research sessions offered.

Head of Early Years Education, Edge Hill University

The Sheffield EdD is a vibrant and successful part-time, distance learning programme which attracts students from all over the world. We are proud to announce that the Sheffield EdD has now been running for over 20 years and is continuing to grow in strength and popularity. The programme is based on a combination of distance learning and weekend study schools. The programme is designed to enable each student to focus on issues relating to her/ his own professional needs. The main aim of the programme is that students develop their own high standards of research that will be relevant to a range of professional and managerial careers.

The EdD is divided into two Parts; Part 1 is the taught element of the course and runs over two years while Part 2 is the research component. In Part 1 students undertake a series of modules, some of which focus on research training in preparation for Part 2. In Part 2 students undertake an independent study in an area of their choice, under the supervision of their own personal supervisor. The programme duration is usually 4-8 years.

Named Routes

The Sheffield EdD is sub-divided into Named Routes and each student is attached to one particular Named Route. Students must apply to a particular Named Route. The routes for 2018/19 entry are:
