Base station antennas for next generation mobile communication networks

Typical requirements for modern base station antennas include multi-band operation, tight restrictions on radiation pattern (including adaptive radiation patterns) and minimum visual impact.

With sponsorship from Vodafone, we are developing an efficient analysis technique and a robust optimisation algorithm to facilitate the design of these antennas. The analysis technique uses a closed-form original MoM code for printed antenna structures which is driven by a novel optimisation algorithm that uses distribution statistics to guide its search for optimal designs.

The optimisation algorithm will be used in conjunction with the analysis code to find the element shapes, array topologies and feed structures most suitable for use in base station antennas.
