The innovative adaptive flywheel is modular and offers unparalleled configurability in terms of power to energy ratio which makes it the first dynamic energy storage system whose discharge duration can be matched exactly to the applications requirements.

The grid-connected research facility is one of the largest and fastest battery storage systems in the UK.

Flywheel and battery energy storage systems are well suited to provide CO2-neutral dynamic grid stabilisation. However when each is used in isolation they may not be able to mitigate all types of destabilisation event, for example, flywheels are often used for short term energy storage and can respond quickly in the order of milliseconds to dynamic frequency destabilisation whereas battery systems may be of better use during longer destabilisation periods.

Additionally there are technical limitations to each technology, for example, existing flywheels have a fixed ratio of power (kW) to capacity (kWh), which for most applications leads to an oversized installation, resulting in poor economics for the installation and long payback terms. Utilisation of both technologies in a combined system will provide an advanced grid stabilisation solution which can effectively deal with a range a stability events.

AdD HyStor will demonstrate an adaptive flywheel battery hybrid energy storage system using an innovative adaptive-flywheel which allows operators to configure its power and capacity to complement the power and capacity of a low cost battery, and hence to exactly match the requirements of an application. The result is a bespoke energy storage system with fast response, high cycle-life and long duration capabilities. With this approach, a storage system with the optimum economics can be developed and set up for each application, maximising the return on investment (ROI) for installers. The innovative adaptive flywheel is modular and offers unparalleled configurability in terms of power to energy ratio which makes it the first dynamic energy storage systems whose discharge duration can be matched exactly to the applications requirements.

AdD HyStor will develop and demonstrate an innovative adaptive flywheel battery hybrid energy storage system for dynamic grid stabilisation. The project will leverage existing battery energy storage pilot sites in the UK and Ireland to demonstrate an EU manufactured and technically specific adaptive-flywheel, creating a dynamic energy storage system where discharge duration can be matched exactly to the application requirements.

In the first stage of the project, the flywheel facility will be installed in Ireland, piloted by Schwungrad Energie Limited at their Hybrid Flywheel-Battery facility, which has already seen a successful and highly beneficial demonstration project, in collaboration with EirGrid.

The flywheel system will be capable of a peak power of 500kW and able to store 10kWh of energy. The system will then be installed at the University of Sheffield’s 2MW battery facility at Willenhall near Wolverhampton.
