Andrew graduated from Birmingham University in 2001 with an M.Eng in Electronic & Electrical Engineering. He developed his interest in optics at Durham University where he carried out his PhD in the use of computer-generated holograms for three-dimensional lithography, graduating in 2005. After a stint of bar work in the Lake District and having toyed with the idea of becoming an outdoor pursuits instructor, he moved to Sheffield to rock climb and to work with Prof. John Rodenburg on the “Ultimate Microscopy” Basic Technology programme.
Andrew returned to academia in 2013 after a couple of years working for Phase Focus Ltd, a Sheffield University spin-out company commercialising the ‘Virtual Lens’ algorithms he developed during his time as a research associate.
