Christmas 2017 Bank Holiday and Closure Day Information

It has been agreed that this year’s Christmas and New Year closures will be as follows:

Friday 22nd December at 6pm – the vast majority of University buildings will close at this time and re-open on at 8am on Tuesday 2nd January 2018. The Diamond will close at 10pm on Sunday 24th December and re-open at 8am on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.

Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th of December are Bank Holidays. Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th December are closure days. Monday 1st January 2018 is a Bank Holiday.

The only University building which will remain open over the holiday period is the Information Commons, which will be open 24/7 throughout the holiday period. However, following discussions with the Students’ Union officers and analysis of usage last year over the holiday period, only the ground and first floors will remain open during the following times:

  • 24th December 2017 – 10pm to 7am
  • 25th December – 10pm to 7am
  • 26th December -10pm to 7am
  • 31st December – 10pm to 7am
  • 1st January 2018 – 10pm-7am

This limited access will allow us to ensure that we are saving as much energy as possible whilst still providing a good service to those students who use the IC over the holiday period.

Any staff requiring out of hours access to support essential research activities during the Christmas break must advise their Departmental Manager or Laboratory Superintendent and provide their name and details of the building they wish to gain access to. All information must then be forwarded to the University’s Security Supervisor Team (securitysupervisors@sheffield.ac.uk) by Friday 16th December 2017, who will in turn brief colleagues within the Security Control of authorised access.

All essential staff requiring access must have already completed out of hours training and departments are strongly advised to complete risk assessments for the activities that are being undertaken.
