What are Partners English classes?
'Partners English Classes' are free general English language classes offered to the international partners of fully-registered degree level University of Sheffield students. The classes are offered by the English Language Teaching Centre, in co-operation with the University's Students' Union.
What levels of classes are there?
There are beginners, pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper-intermediate classes for women and one mixed ability class for men. The classes are friendly and relaxed, with an emphasis on improving spoken English and are taught by qualified teachers, assisted by student volunteers.
How will I know which level to attend?
You will take a short placement test with a teacher to check your level of English so we can recommend the right class for you.
When are the classes?
The classes are on Monday and Friday mornings, 09:30am - 11:00am (3 hours a week). The classes are offered in Autumn semester and Spring semester.
We offer a free crèche for children aged between 1 and 5 years old. You can leave your child in the creche while you are in class. This is run by qualified staff (subject to availability). We regret that children under 1 year cannot be accommodated, in accordance with national legislation. Please note that we have a limited number of spaces in the creche and that it fills up early in Autumn semester. You will be put on a waiting list if the creche is full.
How can I register on a Partners English Course?
Students will need to complete a registration form. Please come in to ELTC Reception at 78 Hoyle Street to collect a registration form OR you can go to the Students Advice Centre in the Students' Union for a form. You can also collect a registration form for the creche if you need it.
What is the date and time for registration?
Please bring your completed registration form AND your partner's blue U card to one of the registration sessions - either Monday 30 September or Friday 4 October 2019. Registration is between 9.30am and 11.30am in the Octagon Centre Council Chamber.
Students can also register for the classes throughout both semesters at 11.15am on Monday mornings in the Octagon Centre Council Chamber.
***Please note spaces are subject to availability - you may be placed on a waiting list.
