Online Speaking and Language Advisory Service
As part of our response to Coronavirus (COVID-19), the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) now offers Online Speaking and Language Advisory Service (SLAS) appointments. These are 30-minute online sessions to help you practise your communication skills in English and/or answer any questions you may have about different aspects of English language
|What is it?||Who is it for?||When?|
|1 to 1 English language and academic skills tutorials||Degree level University of Sheffield students||All year - limited availability in vacations|
|30 minute appointments - Online||Free||1 to 1|
Do you have some questions about English Language? Do you want to improve your pronunciation? Would you like some general practice with your speaking? You can sign up for a free 30 minute online tutorial with one of our specialist English Language Tutors.
These appointments are for fully registered, degree-level students at the University of Sheffield and for students studying in the Department for Lifelong Learning.
University of Sheffield International College (USIC) and full-time ELTC students are not eligible for this service.
There is an online booking system for the Speaking and Language Advisory Service (SLAS) appointments. You must register with the online booking system to book a SLAS appointment. Please follow the link below to register.
If you have previously registered for a Writing Advisory Service appointment you will not need to register again for the Speaking and Language Advisory Service.
What we do
You can use your appointment to discuss any of the following areas:
- General speaking practice in English
- Presentation skills practice
- Questions about English language (e.g. grammar)
- Pronunciation practice
- Questions about academic style
- General conversation practice on topics of interest.
What we do not do
Our tutors will not look at your written work during a SLAS appointment, but you can book a Writing Advisory Service (WAS) appointment instead; however, you can ask general questions about academic style.
Our tutors cannot provide help with content related to your subject because they are not specialists in your subject area; questions about content should be answered by your supervisor.
Booking An Appointment
On the booking system you can view available appointments by clicking the 'English Language Advisory Services (ELAS)' link after logging in using your University of Sheffield account details.
Please be aware that appointments appear in the calendar up to 2 weeks in advance and you will only be able to view appointments that are available.
Booking tips: New appointments usually appear in the Calendar every day so remember to check it regularly. Also, students sometimes cancel appointments so the appointment becomes available again - keep checking the Calendar! Finally, at certain times of year, we add appointments very late. This is because of staffing changes. We're sorry about this but please be aware that we're doing our best!
Making an appointment
- Appointments are individual i.e. one person per appointment.
- You can only book one appointment at a time
- Bookings can be made online
- Appointments are subject to availability
- You can teachers in advance what you would like to cover in the session when you make an appointment
- You must inform the ELTC if you cannot attend the session (see Cancelling appointments below). If you are more than 15 minutes late for your SLAS appointment without informing us, your appointment will be cancelled and you may NOT be allowed to make new appointments for a month.
Our tutors are qualified and experienced English language teachers but may be unfamiliar with your subject area. However, they can still help with general language points or aspects such as organisation and cohesion of ideas when discussing your work (e.g. an academic presentation). A general principle is that you should be understood by an educated, non-expert (like our teachers!).
Because our tutors teach on various ELTC programmes, they have complicated timetables so you may not be able to see the same tutor more than once.
If you make an appointment but are not able to attend then you MUST cancel (unbook) your appointment using our online booking system at least 24 hours before your appointment. This will allow another student to take your place; you can then book another appointment or put yourself on the waiting list.
For last minute cancellations due to special circumstances e.g. illness, please contact the ELTC Reception to cancel as soon as you can, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you fail to cancel you will be temporarily banned from making new appointments.
Issues or concerns
We work hard to provide you with a good service; however, if you have any concerns or complaints about our Online Speaking Advisory Service, please contact us at email@example.com.
