My research is focused on the first seven plays by British contemporary playwright, Philip Ridley. I am exploring aspects of his work which are ignored in small body of academic work about his plays that currently exists. I am considering the uncanny nature of the single room setting he puts on stage, how it acts as a double for the characters inhabiting that space and how it may also act as a double for the unseen but talked about exterior location of The East End of London. I am also considering how nostalgia and memory, through ritual (particularly storytelling) inform the creation of identity. Finally I am examining the imagery he creates through language and his concerns with the breakdown of language and thus the collapse of identity and society.
