I am an AHRC-funded CDA student researching the household and estate community at Chatsworth in the nineteenth century, between 1811 and 1908. Using letters, diaries, witness statements and other documents in the Devonshire Collection archive, my thesis explores the extent to which Chatsworth was a ‘curated’ community. It considers how social expectation conformed and conflicted with reality in the daily lives of servants, workers and tenants.
