We have experts specialising in literature, language, linguistics, theatre, film and creative writing. We also have the largest group of researchers in the UK working on the intersection of language and literature. The interdisciplinary nature of the School of English provides unique opportunities for cross-departmental and collaborative research.
We are currently ranked the number 1 English department in the UK for research environment (UK Research Excellence Framework 2014).

Find a supervisor
Once you know what you would like to study, it’s important to find a supervisor who is an expert in the area, and who can guide you through the three-year programme.
Every PhD candidate at the University of Sheffield is required to submit a supporting statement prior to acceptance onto the programme.
Application process
To apply to study for a PhD with us, you will need to make a formal application using the University of Sheffield’s online application form.
Scholarships and funding
There are several different scholarship and funding options available to PhD candidates interested in studying at the School of English. Some of these are provided by the University of Sheffield, and others are offered by external funding bodies.
