Year 12 English Taster Day

Our School of English invites Year 12 students to a free 'Y12 English Taster Day', taking place here at the University of Sheffield on Wednesday 26 June - full programme details are below. The event is designed to give students a taste of what university-level study in English is like. Following a brief introduction, participants will select from a menu of seminar sessions led by PhD students from the School of English. Later in the day they will also get to meet current English undergraduates and hear more about what it's like to study English Language, Literature, Linguistics and Theatre at university.

10 – 10.15am Welcome to the School of English 
An introduction to the School, outlining the different disciplinary areas and the advantages of studying English at University.
10.15 – 11.15am

1.30 – 2.30pm Gothic Origins –Sheffield Gothic, School of English
An introduction to the Gothic, working out exactly what we mean when we say Gothic and discovering how it evolved from Ancient Rome to Dracula.
2.30-2.45pm Evaluations & close


This event is open to Y12 students interested in studying English or a related discipline, including Literature, English Language, Linguistics and Theatre at University.

Students can book places individually and we also accept group bookings (for a maximum of 10 x places per school/ college) from teachers. For group bookings - we can accept one accompanying teacher per group, but we are equally happy for pupils to attend unaccompanied.

Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. We expect participants to engage with the full programme of events, from the 9.30am start until 2:45pm close and ask that you make your travel arrangements around these times.

The event will take place in the Humanities Research Institute (HRI), 34 Gell Street, Sheffield, S3 7QY, a short walk from public transport links on West Street and Glossop Road and from the University Supertram stop on Upper Hanover Street. A campus map is available at here

Please note: the event follows a very different format to an Open Day and will not involve a full 'recruitment pitch'. Students considering applying to study Archaeology and/or History should seek to attend Open Days in addition. Book your place here
