University of Sheffield welcomes delegates from China’s Jilin University

Researchers from Jilin University visited the University of Sheffield’s Department of Chemistry, as Sheffield continues to strengthen its relationship with the region.

Delegation at Firth CourtA delegation of five staff and ten students from Jilin University were welcomed by staff from the Faculty of Science and the Department of Chemistry, building on links made during a University of Sheffield trip to Jilin earlier this year.

During the recent two-day event, the Jilin delegation met with key members of University of Sheffield, explored the campus and city, and visited Chatsworth House in the Peak District.

The second day of the visit was dedicated to chemistry research, as scientists from both institutions learned about each others’ work during a symposium and poster session.

Professor Anthony Meijer, Director of Research in Chemistry, hosted the symposium which featured lectures from Professors Dayang Wang, Wenjing Tian and Kun Liu from Jilin University, and Professors Jim Thomas and Steve Armes from Sheffield.

The poster session allowed students from both institutions to discuss their experiences of completing a research degree in the UK and China.

Professor Graham Leggett, Head of the Department of Chemistry said: “We were delighted to host this visit by a team of excellent chemists from Jilin University. There is the potential here to build a strong collaborative partnership and we look forward to further interactions in the near future.”

Jilin University was founded in 1946 in Changchun City, Jilin Province, and ranks in the top 20 universities in China (QS World Rankings 2019).

It is one of 42 Chinese universities classified in 2017 as Double First Class, a Chinese Ministry of Education scheme aiming to create a group of world-class institutions by 2050.
