My degree has helped me stand out at work
Why did you decide to study geography, and why did you choose Sheffield?
At A Level I found geography the most interesting. Although it was not my strongest subject, I knew I would enjoy a degree in it and therefore be more willing to work hard to achieve with a less regimented timetable.
What has your career path been since graduation?
I did an internship with HMRC for 2 months, worked at the Environment Agency for 6 months and then did a 2-year graduate scheme with Samworth Brothers, a food manufacturer, before starting at the Ministry of Justice.
How did studying geography help you get to where you are now?
I think it gave me a greater appreciation for the intricacies of the people and world around me. This means that I interrogate information in a particularly critical way and leads me to question things that others may not have thought of. Pointing these things out helps the team/business I work for avoid potential problems and has helped me stand out within my roles.
What made your time in Sheffield special?
The people!
What advice would you give to new students in the department?
I would recommend joining a society or team you like the sound of and getting as involved as you can. It will really help you in getting that first job out of university and is a great way to make new friends! Subject wise, I would say use your tutor as much as possible. Not all subjects are able to have one-on-one time with an academic and they can really help you improve as they have a closer relationship with you than others you may be taught by.
