Under the supervision of Dr Deborah Sporton, Director of SIDshare and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography, students have also built a 30 bed Field Centre at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in partnership with the Kilimanjaro Environmental Development Association (KEDA). The SIDshare/KEDA Centre hosts range of guests from students and academics undertaking research to holiday makers generating income that support KEDA’s livelihood projects within local communities as well as local employment. Students regularly visit the centre to undertake research projects, field classes as well as work on social enterprise projects in collaboration with KEDA.

“Being part of the team working on the new field centre in Tanzania has been an exciting chance to see a project from initial stages to completion. The chance to go to Tanzania with SIDshare in the summer to research field centre opportunities gave me unique insight into NGO operations abroad.”

Joanna Moody (SIDshare Chair 2016/17 and Geography Undergraduate).

Many of our students who stay on to study on our International Development Masters courses also get the opportunity to visit the centre through a specially tailored International Development field class as well as dissertation research and work placements with KEDA.
