GeogSoc Fundraising Achievements
The Department of Geography's award winning geography society, GeogSoc, has over 500 members and provides a welcoming community for new students, along with a wide range of events, including an end of year ball. It also promotes volunteering opportunities and charity projects, and organises a range of sports teams that participate in intramural leagues.
Charities and the community are extremely important to the society, which raised over £1000 for local charities in 2016. This year GeogSoc have taken part as a society in the Sheffield 10K, held a Tour Raffle and Charity pub quiz, raising over £500. Recently a group of GeogSoc members also went and helped at the Cathedral Archer Program, a local homeless shelter, helping with their harvest appeal. With the annual auction still to come, 2017 has been another successful year of fundraising.
GeogSoc runs social events and activities throughout the year, giving students a chance to integrate and enjoy themselves. An annual tour is arranged by the committee for 100 students to go abroad, visiting places such as Budapest, Prague and this year Lisbon.
The society also runs many academic and career events, tailored by the student committee to suit the student body. Inviting guest speakers and careers advisers helps to guide students through their university lives and beyond. Volunteering in nearby schools is also arranged, providing students with the opportunity to give back to the community and put their knowledge into practice.
