Welcome to the University of Sheffield Geography Society! Geogsoc has loads to offer, and our Facebook page is a great way to find out what’s going on in the society such as our upcoming socials, academic events, and charity fundraisers as well as loads more.

Our society prides itself on being one of the biggest and best here at Sheffield University: we have over 550 members. There are so many ways in which you can get involved including: socials throughout the year such as our colouring in social in Freshers; a weekend away to a European city; intramural hockey, football and netball teams; academic events; career events, and; lots of charity fundraisers!

As a society we aim to provide a bridge between the department and you to ensure you have the best time here at Sheffield while studying Geography! This year we are planning bigger and better things than ever before including alumni events, a cross departmental bar crawl, charity run, sports day and so much more. If you have any questions or want to get involved feel free to contract myself, or any of the committee.

Please feel free to drop us and email if you have any questions or concerns.

So what do we offer...?

GeogSoc hosts a number of very varied socials throughout the year. This year we are hoping to host more than ever, including a huge cross departmental bar crawl down West Street with all the other departmental societies! As well as lots of new and exciting events, we will also be hosting some of our all-time favourites such as the Colouring in Social to start off the academic year and the Geography end of year Ball.

With such a big society, GeogSoc is capable of raising a lot of money for charity, and last year we raised a record of £1000. This coming year we want to triple this figure and aim to raise £3000 for our chosen charities by holding a number of fundraising events, such as the TenTenTen Sheffield 10k run in October, and our annual charity Christmas Auction.

We have a range of volunteering projects based in the local Sheffield community, including tutoring schemes in Longley Park Sixth Form Centre and Firth Park Academy. These projects are designed to help you give something back to your adopted community - the schools and students highly regard our contributions from the mentoring scheme... and its great experience to put on your CV!

Sports The society won the Societies Cup in 2014 which is a testament to how great our teams are. We have the largest number of sports teams in the intramural leagues, including successful hockey, football and netball teams. This year, we are hoping to build on the already expansive programme and hold a sports day for the society in the spring. Whether you're a semi-professional or a beginner we'd love you to join our teams and help us take back the societies cup!!!
Tour This year, the Geography Society has introduced two new positions to the committee: our tour secs! These two will ensure this year’s tour is the best yet. GeogSoc tour entails a weekend trip away to somewhere in Europe, with trips in the past including Budapest, Dublin and Prague.
Academics and Careers As well as having loads of fun, the Geography society is also here to help you gain and improve your academic skills. We have numerous academic sessions throughout the year such as an academic Q&A in Freshers Week, revision tip sessions in the run up to exams, dissertation advice and alumni events to help you on your career path. We also have guest lecturers come in to talk on very interesting topics such as migration, sustainable development and much more.

Membership for GeogSoc costs just £35 for 3 years and are available online at the following link.

The fee goes towards putting on and making sure we give you the best value for money for all the socials, sports, charities and activities you can get involved in during your time at Sheffield.

We also offer special discounts for international students who are here for either 1 month or 1 year.
