I am a graduate of the University of Liverpool Department of German (BA 1967, PhD 1970). I joined the teaching staff in German at the University of Hull in September 1969, leaving there in July 1971 to join Germanic Studies at Sheffield in October 1971, where I remained on the active staff until my retirement in September 2010. My research has mainly concerned the language and society of Luxembourg, although I have also published on regional and historical varieties of German and on the history and culture of the Netherlands. I have also written on German immigration to Great Britain, and the early history of radio broadcasting from Luxembourg.
I was Director of the University of Sheffield Centre for Luxembourg Studies from 1995 to 2010. In 1999 I was appointed a Commander in the Luxembourg National Order of Merit and in 2011 a Commander in the Grand Ducal Order of the Couronne de Chêne.
