What Our Students Say

Amanda has completed the Advanced Certificate Language and Communication Impairment in Children programme.

What kind of context you work in?

I work as part of a small team covering a large geographic area; I am the only speech and language therapy assistant. I work mainly with pre school children; running narrative training and training for early year´s workers. I support a therapist in a special school, working with mainly ASD children who have varying levels of communication needs. We also run weekly drop-in clinics, which offer instant help and advice to concerned parents and carers of pre school children. These clinics are a huge challenge and very popular; you just don´t know what difficulties the children will have. You need good all round knowledge and an understanding of general child development and development of speech and language.

How has the Advanced Certificate LACIC course been useful to you?

The course has increased my knowledge and developed some new interests for me. The modules covered within the course were all very relevant to my work and extremely interesting

How has the course benefitted your career?

The Advanced Certificate has been hard work but extremely rewarding. I have gained my band 4 status, and I will now be working within school settings supporting children with varying needs, and dropping the administrative role I had. The course has given me and my colleagues the confidence to do this.

What advice would you give to others who are considering enrolling on the course?

To complete the course you need to be well organised and have the stated recommended time for studying. I have been extremely lucky in that I have huge support from my team while completing this course; it would have been difficult to do the course without this support and flexibility. This is the first distant learning course I have completed, and the experience has been wonderful; I have enjoyed supporting, and the support I have received from other students online and the tutors have been approachable and accessible. I would highly recommend this course for anyone working with children who have communication difficulties, if you have the interest and commitment, go for it!

What kind of context you work in?

I have been working as a speech and language therapy assistant for 15 years with a vast range of children who have varying levels of communication difficulties. The complexity of difficulties has increased with my experience and I consider myself to have a wide range of skills.

Why did you enrol on the Advanced Certificate LACIC course?

The longer I have been in post the more I wanted to understand about the difficulties I encountered.

How has the course been useful to you?

The LACIC course has provided an increased level of knowledge and understanding that has been both useful and productive. It has enabled me to reflect on my own practice and improve it. It has increased my confidence in my own abilities and I have enjoyed the challenge of producing assignments which are very relevant to my role. I also feel it has increased my confidence within my role.

What advice would you give to others who are considering enrolling on the course?

Distance learning brings it own challenges and the tutors and other group members have provided lots of support. The course requires a large commitment in time and motivation but I found it very rewarding and informative. I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding.
