“I really enjoyed the diversity of the course. I believe this was a positive part of the degree being able to appreciate other people’s perspectives and thoughts.”

Emil studied the BMedSci Health and Human Sciences Degree between 2016 and 2019. Originally from Norwich, he has spent a lot of time in a healthcare environment due to his cerebral palsy. This led him to want to pursue a career in healthcare and, as he puts it, “support, innovate and improve the lives of others.”

“When I went to the Open Day, I really enjoyed the campus and city.” he recalls.  “Furthermore, after speaking to Mick Ashman [Health Sciences School Lecturer] I really felt he cared and would support me throughout the three years I spent there (which he did).”

“I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare but I was not sure in what capacity.” says Emil, explaining why he chose to study Health and Human Sciences. “A major attraction that I found with this degree was that you could take the three years and understand various aspects of the health care infrastructure, from: public health; gaining clinical knowledge; research; and management. Only from being exposed to the various disciplines of healthcare, I realised I wanted to specialise within the management side.”

“What I found most enjoyable about the course was learning the management concepts from the historical understanding and then how to use that knowledge and integrate that into  current practice.”

“The course helped me shape the career that I wanted to pursue in Healthcare Management. The course/degree afforded me the foundation knowledge which I have been able to progress and study a MSc degree in Healthcare Operational Management at the University of Warwick.”

Emil now works in the Medical Education Management Team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust thanks to the experience he gained from his studies. He hopes to move up within the service management side of healthcare and increase his knowledge of working with the healthcare consulting sector.

“The advice that I would give to prospective students considering studying the course would be to approach it being open-minded to experience various aspects of the healthcare disciplines.” explains Emil. “Importantly, when you get to the stage of reaching your placement in third year use it as a stepping stone into the career you want to take.”
