Professor J D Jackson
Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield
Emeritus Professor at the University of Manchester
Professor Jackson was leader of the Nuclear Engineering Research Group at the University of Manchester from 1984 to 2001. In the course of his long career there, he obtained very substantial funding for his research from the UKAEA, NNC, Nuclear Electric/BEGL, BNFL, Magnox Electric, the UK Nuclear Industry Management Committee (IMC), HSE(NII) and the European Union. This supported a strong team of research students, postdoctoral researchers and international visitors. He carried out research relating to three Gen IV reactor types (LMFBR's, HTGR's and SCWR's). During the 1980s and 1990s, his team performed experiments on liquid sodium heat transfer, using a number of sophisticated test facilities. Professor Jackson has remained research active since his retirement from the University of Manchester in 2001. He has participated in several international projects and consortia, delivering numerous keynote lectures, the most recent one being at the 9th International Heat Transfer Symposium in Beijing in 2016.
