Departmental social, cultural and sporting events
The student-run Hispanic Society arranges an exciting programme of social, cultural and sporting events. These include film-shows and the annual Spanish play, which is organised entirely by undergraduate and postgraduate students.
La Sociedad Hispánica exists with the aim of promoting things Hispanic and and generally having a good time. Events include salsa and 'tapas' evenings, parties, theatre productions, club nights, and much more!
Events are organised weekly. The Sociedad also helps in the planning of larger events such as the annual Modern Languages Ball.
The Film Club meets regularly to view pre-recorded films, and documentary material obtained commercially or recorded off-air. Departmental holdings on video cover a wide range of feature films from Spain, Portugal, Latin-America and other countries.
Music figures strongly, and Sheffield is home to the country's only Hispanic Departmental choir.
International lecture and conferences
The annual international Galdós lecture and visits by contemporary Spanish and Latin American writers play their part in maintaining a lively intellectual environment.
Recent major conferences on 'Sporting Cultures' and on the Spanish novelist Ramón Sender attracted academics to Sheffield from across the UK, Spain, Latin America and the US.
Official student exchange schemes between Sheffield and the Universities of Granada, Málaga, Oviedo, Palma, Salamanca, Las Palmas, Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Valencia and Vigo ensure a constant presence of native Spanish speakers in Departmental social activities as well as in formal language classes.
Departmental football, cricket, tennis, hockey, swimming and volleyball teams are active in intramural university leagues.
In addition, departmental staff are eager to encourage interest in their own sporting specialities. These include (where different from the above) orienteering, fell running, rowing and sculling, water polo and/or any combination of these.
