The Department of History is one of the most active centres for historical research in the country, with a complement of nearly 40 academic staff and around 60 PhD students.

Research areas

The Department of History has a distinguished record of internationally outstanding, innovative and interdisciplinary historical research. Our research interests extend chronologically from ancient history to contemporary history and geographically from Britain to the Middle East and from America to India. We cover a wide range of themes including political, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual history, with a distinct specialism in the application of digital technologies to historical research.
