University of Sheffield History Society
The University of Sheffield History Society (or HSTSOC as we like to be called) is one of the biggest and most active societies within the University. The society is here to help students within the department get the most of out their degree- both socially and academically, and we offer a wide range of events and activities for everyone.
The society is run by a dedicated team of undergraduate students who are passionate about making sure that all of our members have the best experience possible. Each committee member has a different role, focusing on every part of society life; from volunteering and charity work, to careers, sport and social events.
Here are a few examples of what we get up to throughout the university year…
Each year the society adopts two charities to raise money for- often within the local area. The charities are chosen by our members, and all of our fundraising is overseen by our two charity officers. We organise many events aiming to bring historians together whilst raising money for these good causes; we hold an annual Christmas Charity Cocktail evening, as well as other events throughout the year. If you would like to find out more about the charities we are supporting this year, please get in contact with us.
The society is very proud of its sports teams, which take part in the University’s intra-mural leagues. We have league-topping teams in netball, football, hockey, rugby, and dodgeball, which are open to players of all ability. HSTSOC sport is a great way to meet fellow historians, take up a new sport, or just stay active- all in a fun, social and pressure free environment.
The society also aims to offer its members support within the subject. We have strong links with the History Department and its members of staff, and it is our education officer’s job to ensure that all student concerns are voiced. We hold drop-in sessions for first years, as well as supporting the university’s careers and development lecture programme.
We hold a number of socials throughout the year, aiming to bring the society together and encourage everyone to get to know each other. Our Freshers’ Social is one of the biggest events in our calendar and is a great opportunity for HSTSOC members old and new to socialise. On top of this we also hold events for Halloween and Christmas, as well as ‘sober-socials’ and events alongside other societies. We also hold an annual trip abroad in February, taking members of the society to a European city for a weekend of fun, games and history. And we end the year with our classiest event; the HSTSOC summer ball. The society aims to hold at least one event a month, so we you are never short of fun
The society has many links within the local community, and members are able to be involved in both weekly and one-off volunteering events. In the past we have been linked to Western Part Museum- taking part in ‘Hands on History’ events, have held children’s workshops during Sheffield Community Week, and we are also involved with Project Buzz, an educational after-school club for children within the local area. We are very proud of our volunteering connections, and more information can be found on our Facebook page.
