Come and visit us!

Whether you are just starting to thinking about your choices or are already holding an offer for one of our degrees, open days are a great opportunity to find out more about studying History at Sheffield and to get to know our staff and students.

University pre-application open days

Pre-application open days let you explore life at the University of Sheffield. You can learn about accommodation, finance, sports facilities and life at our award winning Students' Union.

Our campus tours allow you to visit our library, sports centre and Students' Union, while our accommodation tours take you to the student village to get a feel for where you would be living. We would also recommend having a look around the city; the University is a 10 minute walk from the centre and forms a major part of the city's vibrant, friendly atmosphere.

Our History talks give you the opportunity to find out about the History Department and our degree programmes and our Faculty Exhibition offers you the chance to informally chat to staff and current students.

History post-offer open days

You may have already been to a pre-application Open Day, but a department Open Day is different. It has a greater focus on departmental life so you can form a real impression of what it's like to study history at Sheffield.

You will be invited to spend a day in Sheffield where you can visit the Department to find out more about your chosen course, experience our teaching first-hand and talk to our students and staff. If you have applied to one of our dual degrees, you will also have opportunity to visit your dual department.

You will also be able to discover why Sheffield offers one of the best student experiences in the UK at our University-wide exhibition and get to know the University better through tours of the campus, libraries, accommodation and sports facilities.

Open days will take place on 16 February, 2 March, 16 March and 13 April 2019.

Our history talk includes:

History at Sheffield

You’ll find out more about the degree programme, the wide range of choice you’ll have in what you study, and what our graduates go on to do – in short, what makes Sheffield such a wonderful place to study history.

Student experience and Q&A

Some of our current students will tell you about projects they are involved with and the History Society, giving you a first-hand insight into their experience. You also have chance to ask any questions you might have and get their perspective on studying history at Sheffield.

Experience our teaching

One of our lecturers will join us to give you a first-hand experience of our teaching through a short sample lecture focusing on their particular area of specialism.

Applicants will then be taken to one of our seminar rooms for a sample seminar, which will give you a sense of the small-group teaching that’s so important to us.

Parents and other guests will stay with our Admissions tutors and Admissions Manager where we will be able to answer any additional questions.

Refreshments and informal discussion

Everyone will meet back up for an informal chat with our staff and students over tea and cake.

Book your place at a history post-offer open day

If you have received an offer we will send an email inviting you to attend a post-offer open day including information on how to book your place. You can also book your open day place through our applicant MUSE portal, which you will get access to once you have received your offer.

Dual degree applicants

You will be invited to an open day by one of your departments - you will receive an invite from History if you have applied to our dual degrees with Politics, Philosophy or Sociology. You will attend our talk in the morning and then visit your dual department at 2pm.

If you have applied for a dual degree with Archaeology, English or a Language, you will attend their talk in the morning and visit the Department of History at 2pm.
