For the past two years, the University has been placed in The Sunday Times 100 Best-Not-for-Profit Organisations to Work For list.
The survey was sent to a random 30 per cent of staff on Monday 2 October, from the email address firstname.lastname@example.org.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opened the Higher Education Leadership Forum with a message emphasising the importance of Universities to economic prosperity and endorsing the University of Sheffield's investment in leadership development.
The forum was jointly organised by Carleton University and the University of Sheffield.
A team from Human Resources took part in The Big Walk raising funds for The Sheffield Scanner, supported by Juice, which took place from 7am on Friday 30 June. You can support the fundraising through The Blister Packs JustGiving page.

The University has been shortlisted for 2 Employee Engagement Awards; the Employee Engagement Company of the Year (recognising Talent First 2013-2015) and Project of the Year (Not for Profit/Charity, recognising the Staff Survey 2014). The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held on 28 January 2016.
Andrew Dodman, Director of Human Resources has been named as one of HR Magazine's 2015 HR most influential practitioners. Andrew has been named in the top 10 within the 2015 HR Most Influential practitioner rankings, which recognise the HR practitioners and thinkers pushing the field of people strategy forwards.
To celebrate 30 years of Staff Development at the University, a 30 day festival was held throughout November 2015 to get staff thinking about their own development, and recognise all available development opportunities at the University.
The University has registered with The Sunday Times with the aspiration to be included in their Best 100 Companies to Work For List, to enhance our reputation as a top employer of talent. From 5 October, randomly selected staff received a survey from email@example.com focussed on staff experiences of working for the University.
Congratulations to the Department of Mechanical Engineering on receiving an Athena Swan Bronze Award. We now have a total of nineteen awards across the University, with all departments across our STEM faculties now achieving individual awards.
The University has been shortlisted for 2 Personnel Today Awards 2015. Our work on the induction portal has been recognised within the Award for Excellence in Technology category, and Andy Dodman has been shortlisted for HR Director of the Year.
The winners will be announced at an awards evening to be held on Monday 30 November 2015.
Between May and September 2015 our employees will participate in the Juice Global Corporate Challenge in which our employees, in teams of seven, will undertake a 100 day virtual walking journey around the world and record their daily activity levels via the GCC website.
The University celebrated LGBT equality between 27 June and 4 July 2015, including sponsorship of the Sheffield Pinknice and Sheffield Pride, and a series of events focussed around the theme of intersectionality. A web based app, Trans*Map was also lainched by student members of the LGBT+ Committee and Students' Union.

In support of national Mental Health Awareness Week (11 to 17 May) and the University's Time to Change Pledge, Juice has provided a range of new and different activities over the coming months to help staff look after their mental and physical health.
Congratulations go to the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE) and the Department of Psychology on achieving Bronze Awards. We now have a total of eighteen awards across the University, with all departments across our STEM faculties engaged in and working towards their own individual awards.
The University's first portrait to hang in Firth Court depicting a woman has been unveiled at the Portrait of a Woman celebration event, held on 2 March 2015.
Visitors from Carlton University
The Sheffield Leader welcomed back visitors from Carleton University (based in Ottawa, Carleton) on the 23 - 27 March 2015. The team had a packed agenda over the 5 days ensuring catch ups with key staff in Human Resources and other Sheffield Leader stakeholders. Time to Talk day was held on Thursday 5 February 2015, and was a national campaign to encourage everyone to take 4 minutes to have a conversation about mental health.
On Friday 19 December a University-wide Staff Survey Event was held giving colleagues the opportunity to discuss University-level Staff Survey results and contribute to the creation of an action plan.
Next year, The University of Sheffield will be the first University in the UK to run SEED. Seeking Educational Equality & Diversity (SEED) is a series of workshops exploring the inclusive curriculum looking at a wide range of issues related to equality, diversity, inclusion, curricula and educational systems. To mark World Mental Health Day (10 October) the University in collaboration with the Students' Union is committing to signing the Time to Change Pledge, which is a public statement of our aspirations to tackle mental health and the stigma that surrounds it.

Juice shortlisted for Personnel Today Award
19 November 2014. The University of Sheffield's Juice initiative, has been shortlisted for two Personnel Today Awards. The two categories are the award for Health at Work and Public Service HR. The awards ceremony was held on 18 November.
Department of Archaeology achieves Bronze Award in Gender Equality Charter Mark
23 September 2014. Congratulations go to the Department of Archaeology for achieving a Bronze Award in the Equality Challenge Unit's Gender Equality Charter Mark.
USS pension scheme consultation
21 August 2014. Following the latest valuation on 31 March 2014, there will be a series of consultations over the coming months between the Scheme, the employers and the representative trade union, UCU. These will cover the current financial health of the scheme and the potential options for reforming the future benefits of the scheme.
Harmonisation of the working week
21 July 2014. From 1 August 2014, the University will be harmonising its standard working week at 35 hours. Grades 1 and 2 previously had a working week of 37 hours, and this move benefits over 460 staff working in roles at Grades 1 and 2, and will mean that the minimum hourly rate paid by the University is £7.65.

National Pay Award
22 November 2013. The University will be implementing the 1% pay award in December's payroll. This will apply to all staff on the University of Sheffield Grade Structure, Professorial and Professorial Equivalent Pay Structures.
Industrial Action – 31 October 2013
28 October 2013. Three campus trades unions – UCU, UNISON and Unite – are planning to take strike action on 31 October 2013 as part of a dispute about the 2013 national pay award. The University will remain open and will do its utmost to minimise the impact on students.
Most Active Organisation Award!
15 October 2013. The University of Sheffield wins Most Active Organisation in this year's GCC in the Education sector.
11 October 2013. The City of London Police is leading a national campaign to raise awareness and encourage reporting of Hajj fraud. Each year thousands of Muslims across the UK are falling victim to fraudsters, with only a very small percentage reporting it to Action Fraud, making it almost impossible for local police forces to catch those responsible.
Mental Health is for everyone - Time for Change
7 October 2013. The University of Sheffield is once again supporting World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October with a number of activities and events that are aimed at promoting mental health throughout the University. The theme of this year’s event is ‘mental health for everyone’.

26 September 2013. Following the University of Sheffield being awarded ‘highly commended’ in the HR Society Workforce Strategy and Planning Awards in July, the Director of Human Resources, Andrew Dodman, was invited to speak at the HR Society ‘New Business Challenges for HR’ conference in London on 26th September 2013.
University 'highly commended' in the National Mediation Awards
26 September 2013. We are delighted that the University of Sheffield has been highly commended in The Professional Mediators’ Association Awards. Our submission clearly demonstrated that we have an internal mediation scheme which actively engages key stakeholders including ; trade union and HR representatives, senior and line managers to work with staff across campus.
University awarded for commitment to gender equality
26 September 2013. The University's commitment to gender equality and career progression for women in Science, Engineering and Medicine has been further reinforced with a glowing endorsement from a champion for female researchers. Five departments were recognised with new awards by the Athena SWAN Charter – which recognises commitment to advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.

NEW Sheffield Graduate Training Contract
1 September 2013. The University has developed a bespoke contract of employment to ensure that Graduate Teaching Assistants are employed and supported effectively and consistently across the University.
Maternity leave Lean process review
5 August 2013. The maternity leave process has been reviewed, leading to improvements such as a new maternity toolkit, streamlined processes and a maternity leave calculator, as well as enhancing the adoption policy to incorporate surrogacy.
29 July 2013. The work to upgrade the University's recruitment system is now complete.
HR Society Award: University ‘highly commended’ for Workforce Strategy and Planning
29 July 2013. The University has been awarded 'highly commended' in the HR Society Workforce Strategy and Planning Awards for a collaboration with the Institute of Science and Technology on a number of interlinked schemes for technical training, mentoring and skills mapping.
HR work experience scheme
8 July 2013. Human Resources provide a number of work experience opportunities to University of Sheffield students.
Sheffield Leader Goes International!
3 July 2013. A delegation of staff from Human Resources at the University of Sheffield are visiting Canadian universities to further develop long-term collaborative relationships.
New Casual Worker Processes
18 June 2013. The processes by which Casual Workers are registered and paid have been reviewed and reformed to make them more efficient, with the aim of reducing workloads right across the process. Following a successful pilot, these processes will be rolled-out to the rest of the University from 1 July 2013.
New Volunteering Guidance
29 May 2013. New guidance on volunteering is now available to provide information and support, for both staff and managers, on how best to implement and manage working arrangements and relationships to accommodate voluntary activities.
Spreading the Juice message
17 May 2013. The message of Juice – everyday health and wellbeing – received national exposure this week at the annual Universities Human Resources (UHR) conference in York.
1 May 2013. We are delighted to inform you that the University and its recognised trade unions have reached joint agreement on the Change Management policy and related procedures: Restructuring, Redundancy Avoidance, Redeployment, and Redundancy, which will be effective from 1 May 2013.
VC Fellowship campaign recognised
26 April 2013. Our recent Vice-Chancellor's Fellowship recruitment campaign has been recognised by the Public Sector People Managers Association (PPMA), at their Recruitment Awards, by being awarded runner-up in the Most Innovative Use of Social Media category.
Public Health Responsibility Deal
18 April 2013. This month the University has signed up to the Department of Health's Public Health Responsibility Deal. The Public Health Responsibility Deal has been established to tap into the potential for organisations to improve public health and tackle health inequalities through their influence over food, alcohol, physical activity and health in the workplace.
Recognition for VC Fellowships campaign
26 March 2013. We have been recognised for our innovative use of social media in our Leading Minds campaign for the Vice-Chancellor's Fellowships recruitment campaign, with a nomination in the PPMA Recruitment awards.
Arts Tower Blackout success
26 March 2013. Human Resources demonstrated its commitment to Green Impact by supporting the Arts Tower Blackout event and is now delighted to learn that Level 6, the only floor in the building exclusively occupied by Human Resources staff, was the best performing in the Arts Tower.
Juice Hillsborough parkrun
18 March 2013. Saturday 16 March 2013 saw the inaugural Juice parkrun at Hillsborough Park. 90 runners took part, many donning Juice T-shirts to spread the message of everyday health and wellbeing.
Introducing the new version of myJob/myTeam
18 March 2013. From 2 April we will be launching an upgrade to myJob/myTeam. The upgrade will introduce a new, more modern look and feel to these systems as well as new features and functionality.
Apprenticeships and trainees
15 March 2013. An update on the University's work to increase apprenticeships and trainee schemes.
SRDS 2012 participation update
12 March 2013. We are delighted to report that 88% of University staff had an SRDS review in 2012. This high level of participation has been maintained from 2011, and exceeds our target participation level of 85%.
Consultation on review of Section 6 of the University Statutes
20 February 2013. In 2012, Council requested a review of Charter, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations in order to address issues of clarity, consistency and fitness for purpose. As part of the review, Human Resources have been asked to look at Section 6, which relates specifically to the employment of academics.
New Employment Policy Suites
25 January 2013. We are delighted to announce the implementation of a number of new employment policies and procedures.
16 January 2013. In response to changes to the annual statutory reporting requirements, a questionnaire has been sent to all academic and teaching staff about their teaching qualifications.
Record year for staff recruitment
2011–12 saw a new record set for the number of staff joining the University, at over 1300, which helped to increase the University's workforce by 6%.
2012-13 National Pay Negotiations
The national pay negotiations for the 2012/2013 pay round have now concluded. The outcome is an increase of 1% on all points on the pay spine, with effect from 1 August 2012. This increase will be implemented in the December 2012 payroll. The increased pay levels will be backdated to 1 August 2012.
Vice-Chancellor's Fellowships attracts 'Leading Minds'
10 December 2012. The University of Sheffield has received an overwhelming number of applications for the 20 Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship positions.
The Scheme is open to candidates with great potential. The aim is to create Fellows who will contribute and cohort individually in order to make an outstanding contribution to the University, as a research-led institution.

UCU Anti-Stress and Bullying Week
22 November 2012. UCU are running a campaign to highlight stress and bullying in the workplace for the week 19–23 November 2012. This is a helpful prompt for the University to reiterate the support which is available for all staff should they feel they identify with the issues in the campaign.

REF 2014 Equalities and Diversity Training
19 October 2012. The University has launched an online REF equality and diversity training package. The training takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and all staff are welcome to access it via the Learning Management System.
UCU Ballot Results Declared
11 October 2012. Following a sector-wide ballot of its members in relation to the 2012–13 national pay negotiations, UCU has confirmed that it has received a mandate to call upon its members to undertake action short of a strike.

Portrait of a Woman Celebration Evening
1 October 2012. Join us tonight in Firth Hall from 5.30pm to celebrate the Portrait of a Woman Prize. An exhibition of photographs of inspirational female staff members at the University, by leading fine art Photographer Anton Want.
UCU Pause Industrial Action
25 September 2012. UCU has notified the University that it is to suspend the continuous industrial action it has been asking its members to take since October 2011. UCU representatives will now return to the discussions with the HE employers' representatives over the funding arrangements of the scheme which were halted when UCU commenced its action.

Juice Summer Programme
In response to demand, we are delighted to announce our Juice summer programme of free health and wellbeing activities for staff to enjoy, including Bootcamps, Tai Chi, Healthy Eating workshops, Body MOTs, Bouldering and much more.
The programme of activities and events will run from 30 July 2012 to 7 September 2012 and will be open to all University staff.

12 June 2012. A new look staff details page within myTeam has been implemented following the successful technical upgrade of myJob and myTeam earlier this year.
UHR Award – Exceptional HR Achievement
18 May 2012. Human Resources have been awarded another prestigious award: on 17 May the Department scooped the "Exceptional HR Achievement" award at the Universities HR (UHR) Annual Conference and Gala Dinner Event.
17 May 2012. As part of the pilot of free health and wellbeing activities which are an essential part of Juice -a pilot programme of activities and events will run from 21 May 2012 to 6 July 2012 with a special Olympic themed week commencing 25 June 2012.
