Message from the Registrar & Secretary regarding adverse weather conditions
Many thanks to all of you for persevering in the snowy weather yesterday. The University remained open throughout the day, with services for staff and students continuing to run smoothly despite the conditions. The cold snap is due to continue for at least another week, so I am regularly reviewing the weather and transport situation with colleagues and will communicate swiftly if the decision is taken to close the University.
I'd like to take this opportunity to provide some guidance about coming in to work when we have adverse weather conditions, similar to those experienced yesterday. Staff are expected to make every reasonable effort to get into work using alternative means of transport where available. Staff should notify the appropriate person in their department (usually line manager or HoD) if they are unable to come into work because of adverse weather conditions, and to discuss specific arrangements for their department in line with any local guidelines.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, where people's personal safety is at serious risk or buildings can't be operated because of the weather, the University will continue to be open as normal. Your line manager or HoD can advise on any local arrangements for your department.
There are a number of websites that provide up-to-date travel information which I would encourage you to check if you have concerns about getting to and from the University. Some recommended ones are:
