Supporting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans) staff and students project
HR has been successful in securing funding from the Alumni Fund for a project supporting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) staff and students.
According to research undertaken by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) and Stonewall, concealing sexual orientation reduces productivity by up to 30 per cent and people who are out in supportive places are more creative, loyal and productive. The majority of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans students are out to their University friends, but most are more cautious about being out to staff within their institution.
This project will focus on creating visible staff role models for students to engage with and be supported by, and on offering further opportunities for all to come together and discuss different perspectives at seminars and networking events. It also aims to train residential mentors and other staff in dealing with specific issues of LGBT related harassment and bullying, and support the establishment of a staff network.
