Criteria Selection

Criteria selection for colleagues dependent on contract type is outlined below.

Criteria selection for Colleagues on Teaching & Research Contracts

The University of Sheffield is a research intensive university and so the expectation is that the majority of academic colleagues employed on a Teaching and Research contract will undertake significant research activity and normally evidence achievement of the expectations for at least one of the two additional research criteria in addition to the core criterion of high quality research outputs. The remaining additional criteria can be selected from either the research, teaching or leadership criteria.

Alternative criteria selection

It is recognised that some colleagues on Teaching and Research contracts do specialise in teaching and/or leadership and one of the key changes in the academic career pathway framework is the flexibility for this to be formally recognised. For this reason, the pathway allows colleagues to replace the additional research criteria with an additional criterion from either the teaching or leadership categories where there is a benefit to the University and the individual demonstrates a high level of accomplishment in the criterion. In these circumstances, with the agreement of their Vice-President and Head of Faculty, individuals may select their two additional criteria from teaching and leadership instead of research. To seek the approval of the Vice-President and Head of Faculty, follow the process outlined in the alternative criteria selection webpage.

Fellowships

Where an academic staff member on a Teaching and Research contract secures an external fellowship that results in the removal of their teaching duties for a temporary period, they may be unable to demonstrate the achievement of the High Quality Teaching practice core criteria or the additional criteria of Curriculum Enhancement and Improving Teaching Practice. In such circumstances an individual seeking promotion can apply using the Research Specialist Pathway provided that they are still currently on the fellowship or the fellowship has concluded in the last year. Such circumstances should be clearly indicated in the Academic Promotion Summary Statement.

Criteria for Colleagues on Research Specialist Contracts

For colleagues on Research contracts, there are three core criteria: one in each of Research, Leadership and Professional Standing and Wider Engagement. Three out of the four remaining additional criteria are to be selected from the Research and Leadership criteria.
