Part-time contracts

There is flexibility within the framework for academic staff members on part-time contracts to either proportionately reduce the expectations they are required to meet across six criteria or alternatively agree a reduced number of additional criteria to evidence in full.

An individual seeking an adjustment should discuss the matter with their HoD in the first instance, and a proposal for the way in which the ACP framework can be adjusted should be developed. The HoD should seek guidance from Human Resources where necessary and discuss with the Vice President and Head of Faculty to ensure the proposal is consistent with other similar cases in the Faculty.

When applying for promotion, the individual should complete the ‘Individual Circumstances’ section of the ‘Promotion Summary Statement’ and include details of the proposed adjustment. The HoD should also provide details of the proposed adjustment in their ‘Department Statement’.

Proportionate reduction across six criteria

Part time academic staff members who have an even reduction in the way that their workload is allocated as a result of their part time working arrangement (i.e. their research: teaching: leadership ratio is maintained) would be expected to demonstrate proportionately reduced achievement across six criteria.

Academic staff members on part-time contracts applying for promotion should provide information about their working pattern to provide context to their achievements in the Academic Promotions Summary Statement.

Reduction in the number of criteria selected

Academic staff members who have an uneven reduction in the way that their workload is allocated as a result of their part time hours (i.e. their research: teaching: leadership ratio is weighted towards one set of activities) are able to agree a reduction in the number of additional criteria selected rather than demonstrate proportionately reduced achievement across six criteria.

The nature of this reduction should be based on their workload allocation and should normally be agreed and reviewed by their HoD as part of the annual SRDS discussion (or separately if their HoD does not undertake their SRDS) before seeking approval from the Vice-President and Head of Faculty. To seek approval of the Vice-President and Head of Faculty, follow the process in the alternative criteria selection webpage.
