LGBT at the University

Here at the University we believe in a truly diverse and inclusive environment. We actively support Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) staff and students and work with them to improve our available resources and facilities. An induction message from our LGBT Senior Champion, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Gill Valentine outlines our commitment to LGBT equality.

Staff Network

LGBT LogoThe LGBT Staff Network enables LGBT staff to come together to share information, support and, by signalling a LGBT presence on campus, to ensure we maintain a comfortable and fully inclusive environment in which we can each reach our full potential without fear of discrimination.

The Network meets regularly on a formal and social basis, and actively works with the University to develop initiatives and plan future action to enhance the presence of our LGBT community.

Top 100 employer for workplace equality

Stonewall2017Logo177pxThe University has been named as a top 100 employer for lesbian, gay, bi and trans staff for the fourth consecutive year.

Our continued commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion means we’re ranked in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index 2017, the definitive list showcasing the best employers for LGBT equality.

As well as submitting evidence on areas of employment policy and practice, we shared the Stonewall survey with all colleagues back in October 2016. We look forward to working with Stonewall to continue our efforts to create an inclusive workplace for LGBT staff.

Taking Open@TUoS to our students

Open@TUoS group

Our LGBT allies initiative, Open@TUoS, launched in January 2016 as a way to engage our whole University community with the importance of fostering a safe and inclusive environment. By registering for Open@TUoS anyone who works here, regardless of their sexual orientation, can pledge their support for LGBT staff and students.

In Intro Week 2016, colleagues in our Equality and Diversity Team and LGBT Staff Network launched the next phase of Open@TUoS and chatted to students about our new #RainbowLanyard campaign, to raise awareness of what the lanyard means and the importance of visible support for LGBT staff and students.

Support for You

SupportThe University has many inclusive policies and avenues of support for both staff and students. For staff, some of these are Flexible Working, Paternity/Partner leave, Parental Leave and Adoption Leave. There is a also a Personal Harassment Network which is available for all staff on a confidential basis.

There are specific LGBT resources on the webpages including information on coming out, the Bullying and Harassment Network and the LGBT Student Committee.
