Induction Message from LGBT Senior Champion
I am Professor Gill Valentine, Interim Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Senior Champion for the University of Sheffield. My role involves championing LGBT staff at all levels of the institution and representing views to the University Executive Board, in order to raise the profile of LGBT equality in the University. I also listen to concerns or ideas to improve what the University can offer to enhance the experiences of our LGBT staff and students.
At the University we work to create an inclusive environment where staff and students can be themselves and where diversity is valued by all, and much of our equality work is focussed around raising awareness and providing support for LGBT staff and students. Our LGBT activity is a result of the efforts of many people across the University collaborating to make this a remarkable place to work and study. We aim to send the message that this University is a place where everyone will be supported to reach their potential.
Our LGBT activity has grown in strength over the past few years. We have supported Sheffield Pride for 5 consecutive years; this was marked for the first time in 2013 by the flying of the Rainbow Flag outside Firth Court as a visible symbol of support for the LGBT community in the University and the wider city of Sheffield. In 2012 we developed Storying LGBT@TUoS, a film in which our LGBT staff and students share their experiences of being LGBT at the University; this was launched at a University wide event and is available to watch on our webpages. The University is a Diversity Champion for Stonewall, the LGB charity, and in 2013 we were named as a Stonewall Top 100 Employer for the first time, which recognised our continued efforts to enhance our support and facilities for LGBT staff and students, alongside wider collaborations with the city and sector to improve LGBT inclusiveness across the community.
At the University we have an LGBT Staff Network which offers a space where all LGBT staff can come together to access support and advice. The Network holds events and socials across the year with a range of activities for LGBT History Month held in February, which are open to all LGBT staff across the University. If you would like to find out more about the Network or attend a meeting, please see the Staff Network webpages. To find out more about wider equality at the University and relevant policies, see the Equality & Diversity webpage
If you have any questions about our Equality work or would like to get involved, please contact the Equality & Diversity team or the LGBT Staff Network.
