Mandatory ED&I training

The University of Sheffield is committed to building a diverse community of staff and students that recognises and values the abilities, backgrounds, beliefs and ways of living for everyone. Our culture should ensure all members of the University community feel they belong and are treated with respect.

This ED&I e-learning module is mandatory for all staff and PGRs and will help raise awareness of the key topics and issues relating to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion.

The course covers our legal requirements and offers an introduction into how ED&I can affect our University. The course is part of a larger, planned set of courses covering different ED&I topics which will be rolled out shortly to staff and students.

  • The development course is hosted on a platform called Thinkific and should take around 30-45 minutes to complete.
  • When accessing the platform for the first time, you are required to create an account.
  • It is important that you use your University email address when creating your account on the platform so that we can record who has completed it.
  • Remember to use a strong password that is different to the ones you use for your University accounts or other personal accounts.
  • We recommend you use Google Chrome or Safari as your internet browser.
  • You can increase the font by zooming in your browser window.

If you have any additional accessibility requirements, please email and we will assist you.

Why is this mandatory?

We require our employees to all have a baseline understanding of ED&I including the Equality Act 2010. By law, we have a Public Service Equality Duty to

  1. eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010;
  2. advance equality of opportunity between people from different groups;
  3. foster good relations between people from different groups. This training is part of our work to fulfil this requirement.

I am responsible for tracking the completion rates of staff for the different training modules that they have to complete in my team/department/faculty.

How do I know who in my department has completed the training?

The University has is bringing in a new Learning Management System (LMS). Until this new LMS system is in place, HR will be extracting bi-yearly uptake reports from Thinkific that will be circulated to appropriate contacts in departments.

Aside from this, if you require a progress report for your department please email

I already know a lot about ED&I, why do I need to complete it?

We acknowledge that staff will come into this training from various levels of prior knowledge. Even if you believe you have a good understanding of ED&I then we still expect you to complete this training as it is important that you understand what level of knowledge other staff may have and ensure that everyone has the same level of understanding.

Will I need to redo this training in the future?

This training module was launched in November 2020. One year on, we will formally review the contents of the training to see if there is a need for staff to renew it then.

What about new staff?

Staff that have joined the University since the launch should be prompted to complete this as part of their induction.

How do I leave feedback?

You can email feedback to

How can I find more information and training about ED&I issues?

This training is part of the University’s commitment to creating a world class higher education organisation. For more information regarding the University’s plans, click here to access the University's Inclusion Strategies.

How was the training developed?

A task & finish group with representation from HR, Faculty ED&I Directors and other key stakeholders was formed to create this training module. We used the contents in the old ED&I training package at the University and the Equality Act 2010 as guides to create this module. The University is bringing in a new Learning Management System that will bring together all training modules under one system, until that happens we needed a platform that provided both financial and operational value hence why Thinkific was chosen.

How can I download a certificate upon completion?

When you have completed the different chapters, you can click on the button titled 'Get Your Certificate' at the top left of the screen as shown in the screenshot below.
